Challenges for 2019 that will get you outside more

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions for 2019?

Last year I took a risk and joined the 365 mile challenge. I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the support of the wonderful ladies in the Facebook Group kept me motivated all year long! I ended 2018 with 200 biking and 387 hiking miles!

I’m always striving to make healthy choices. I want to get outside more (for all these reasons), and be a better role model for my daughter. So this year I decided to step it up.

Here are the challenges I will be working toward.

365 Mile Challenge

The 365 Mile Challenge is a group with a goal: to get outdoors and move 1 mile a day during 2019.

Unfortunately, this group isn’t free. It costs at least $35 to join. The good news is that investing some $$ is likely to help you stick with it. That fee includes access to the Facebook group and you can enter into monthly prize drawings.

52 Hike Challenge

A challenge where you will gain physical fitness, mental well-being, make new friends, explore new places, and connect with family, friends and yourself through nature.

This website actually offers a few different challenges! I’m going to try for the Explorer series, where I’ll aim to complete 52 different hikes. These challenges are all completely free. There’s a paid option if you’d like to buy finisher medals and things of that sort.

There is also a free 52 Hike Challenge Facebook group that is popular and useful.

I’m so excited for this one! I love finding new places to explore and it will be fun to keep track of them all.

1000 Hours Outside

The 1000 Hours Outside Challenge is a way to encourage each other to get our families outside for 1000 hours between January 1 and December 31, 2019.

1000 Hours Outside Facebook group

I couldn’t find a nationwide group for this challenge, so I created one! Inspired by the Children and Nature network, our goal is to get our families outside for 1000 hours in 2019! That’s about 3 hours a day. Even to an outdoorsy family, that can seem like a lot, but it is doable!

Join the Facebook group at the link above. Here you can connect with other families working toward this goal and find out how to keep track.

I hope you were able to find a challenge that will work for your family! I can’t wait to get out and connect with nature even more this year! What is your biggest obstacle to getting outside on a regular basis?
